Several Kenyans Killed on Frontline in Ukraine War, Intelligence Says
Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence agency (HUR) has confirmed that several Kenyan nationals were killed while fighting with Russian forces in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 23 April, HUR reported that the individuals were deployed near Borova village when they died following a Ukrainian mortar strike. Among those identified was 22-year-old Eric Mwangi Nyambura, who had initially served as a radio operator before being reassigned to an assault unit.
His death was verified through Ukraine’s “I Want to Leave” hotline, a programme aimed at encouraging Russian soldiers and foreign recruits to surrender. According to Ukrainian intelligence, Nyambura travelled to Russia in October 2025 alongside three other Kenyans: Joseph Kamau Wanjiru, Joel Ngure Karithi, and Ronald Kipkirui Kibet.
The group is said to have signed military contracts, received limited training, and then been deployed to the frontline.HUR estimates that nearly 3,000 African nationals have joined Russian forces, with Kenya among the countries contributing the highest numbers. Other countries mentioned include Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Algeria, Mali, South Sudan and South Africa.
Ukrainian officials reported that more than 316 African recruits had been killed by August 2025, noting that the actual number may be higher. The reports have increased concern among Kenyan families, many of whom are seeking information about relatives who travelled to Russia and have not returned.
Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has confirmed at least three deaths, two cases of captivity, and 16 individuals still missing. Diplomatic engagement is ongoing. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi recently held discussions with Russian officials regarding the recruitment of Kenyan nationals.
Russia indicated it would stop further enlistment and cooperate in efforts to repatriate affected individuals, although this remains difficult for those still at the frontline.
