Kenyan-Born Elizabeth Kangethe Enters Tight UK Council Race
Councillor Dr Elizabeth Kangethe has announced her candidacy for the Parsloes Ward seat in Barking and Dagenham ahead of the UK local elections on Thursday, 7 May 2026.
Dr Kangethe, a Kenyan-born community organiser and long-standing Labour activist, is seeking to move her local engagement into an elected role within the council. Her campaign marks a step forward in her public service work, with a focus on representing residents’ interests at local level.
In recent weeks, she has increased her presence across Parsloes Ward through door-to-door canvassing and neighbourhood meetings. She has prioritised direct engagement with residents, discussing concerns such as affordable housing, public services, opportunities for young people, and community safety.
She has emphasised the importance of grassroots involvement, stating that effective leadership depends on understanding the daily challenges faced by local families. Her focus on visibility and accountability aligns with a wider Labour Party effort to strengthen connections with communities as councils face pressure from rising living costs and increasing demand for services.
The Parsloes Ward contest is expected to be closely fought, with candidates from multiple parties campaigning actively ahead of polling day. For Dr Kangethe, the election presents both an opportunity to extend her civic role and a test of her support among voters.
If elected, she would join the council at a time of financial strain and service delivery challenges for local authorities, alongside growing calls for more community-focused governance. Her campaign centres on a commitment to listening to residents, engaging with their concerns, and acting on their behalf.
