“Mumeskia Power?” Ruto’s Joke Delights Diaspora Crowd in Italy
President William Ruto invoked the viral “pawa” phrase while addressing Kenyans in Italy, using it to highlight his government’s energy agenda.
Speaking to the Kenyan diaspora, Ruto referenced the popular expression, which has gained widespread attention on social media after being associated with Oburu Oginga. Commonly used in a humorous context to imply authority or influence, the phrase has become a recognisable part of Kenya’s online and political discourse.
His use of the term drew a positive response from the audience before he turned to policy matters. Ruto linked the phrase to the country’s energy plans, emphasising the need to expand electricity generation. He said the government aims to reach at least 10,000 megawatts to support industrial growth and attract investment.
The remarks were part of a broader engagement with Kenyans living in Italy. During the visit, Ruto is also holding discussions with Italian leaders and investors to strengthen cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and other strategic sectors, while recognising the contribution of the diaspora to national development.
Ruto also cautioned citizens abroad against relying heavily on social media for information about Kenya. He warned that misinformation and manipulated content are increasingly common and urged Kenyans to verify news before accepting it. He said such disinformation can undermine trust and social cohesion.
