Oburu Outlines ODM’s 2027 Strategy, Demands Relief for Struggling Kenyans

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has outlined a strategy to strengthen its grassroots structures ahead of the 2027 General Election, with party leader Oburu Odinga stating that the party is entering a new phase of reorganisation.

Speaking in Nairobi after a Central Committee meeting on 16 April, Oburu said ODM was approaching “a vital new phase of growth and public engagement.” His remarks followed a Special Delegates Convention and the near completion of grassroots elections, which he said had covered 98 percent of the country.

He called on members in the remaining areas to resolve disputes quickly and internally, stressing the importance of unity. The party’s plan centres on a nationwide mobilisation campaign aimed at reinforcing its presence across Kenya.

Oburu said the effort would strengthen the party’s support base and prepare it for the next election cycle. He also announced youth conventions in Nairobi on 20 April and in Mombasa on 26 April, followed by a leadership retreat in early May. He said these initiatives are intended to engage younger members and develop new leaders at the grassroots level.

Oburu also addressed national issues, criticising the government over rising fuel prices. He said the increasing cost of living is placing pressure on households and called for urgent measures to ease the burden on citizens.

On accountability, he urged the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights to speed up investigations into alleged cases of police brutality. He said the party would continue to support those affected and press for timely justice.

Looking ahead, Oburu promised a transparent nominations process for party candidates, stating that no individual would receive preferential treatment. He said the nominations portal would open soon to support fair participation.

He also called on political leaders to maintain respectful and constructive public engagement.
