William Ruto Sets Date for Construction of New Multimillion Airport
President William Ruto will personally officiate the groundbreaking for the Kisii Airport upgrade at Suneka on 15 April, marking the start of construction.
The project will convert the existing Suneka Airstrip into a fully operational commercial airport, with completion expected within eight months. The government has allocated Ksh400 million for the works, ensuring that financial constraints, which had previously delayed the project, are no longer an obstacle.
Plans for the airport include expanding the runway and modernising passenger and cargo facilities to meet commercial aviation standards. The upgrade is intended to enhance regional connectivity, complement Kisumu International Airport, and reduce pressure on smaller airstrips such as Kabunde in Homa Bay.
The project forms part of a broader effort to expand Kenya’s aviation network, which also includes the planned development of Narok Airport. Efforts to modernise the Suneka Airstrip date back to the administration of former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Initially, land acquisition challenges led to consideration of an alternative site, but the government has decided to redevelop the existing facility.
During his three-day development tour in Kitutu Chache, Kisii County, President Ruto also announced plans to construct a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station at Ikonge in Nyamira County. The Ksh300 million project aims to improve local access to the national rail network and integrate the region further into Kenya’s transport infrastructure.
