Babu Owino Says He Is Recovering After Medical Procedure

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has said he is recovering after a recent medical procedure and plans to return to parliamentary work in the new year, as a new opinion poll places him among the leading figures in Luo politics.

In a statement released on Sunday, Owino confirmed that he had undergone treatment and was responding well, following days of public concern about his health. He did not disclose details of the illness or procedure but said public leaders have a duty to communicate openly. He thanked Kenyans for messages of support, which he said had strengthened his family during the period.

“By God’s grace, I am now on the path to recovery and intend to resume my public duties in the new year,” he said.

Owino also addressed Kenyans who spent the festive season in hospital, expressing solidarity with families affected by illness. He quoted Jeremiah 30:17 in a message of encouragement and called for compassion towards those facing health and economic difficulties. He said no one should feel isolated during times of suffering.

His statement followed speculation earlier in December after reports that he had been hospitalised. Two weeks ago, he confirmed he was unwell but provided no further information. Sunday’s message was his first detailed update and appeared intended to reassure supporters about his condition and readiness to return to work.

The announcement came shortly after the release of an Infotrak opinion poll that ranked Owino as the leading preferred successor to the late Raila Odinga within Luo politics. The survey, conducted on 19 and 20 December, showed 33 per cent of respondents supporting Owino.

Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga followed with 10 percent, while Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga recorded seven per cent and Siaya Governor James Orengo four percent. Other leaders, including Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omolo, received lower levels of support.

The poll points to Owino’s rising standing within the Orange Democratic Movement and the wider Luo political base. Analysts attribute his support to his strong public presence, appeal to younger voters, and close engagement with grassroots communities.
