Should Men Shave Armpit Hair? Experts Weigh in on Hygiene and Comfort

Nigerian musician Burna Boy has addressed public discussion about his decision to keep underarm hair, saying it was a practical choice rather than a statement or superstition.

For several years, the Grammy-winning performer appeared on stage shirtless with visible underarm hair, prompting widespread commentary online. In Kenya, where he has a strong fan base, some entertainment platforms mocked the choice, questioning why a wealthy artist would not shave.

The discussion extended beyond humour. Some followers suggested his grooming habits were linked to superstition, claiming his appearance reflected a source of “hidden strength”. Burna Boy rejected these claims in interviews, explaining that keeping the hair helped prevent irritation during performances. He also said that he maintained proper hygiene by using deodorants.

By mid-2025, he chose to shave. His earlier position, however, contributed to a wider conversation about male grooming and cultural expectations. Medical experts note that underarm hair is largely a matter of personal preference.

Dermatologist Dr Gacheri Kathiri of Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital states that shaving is not medically necessary. She explains that trimming may benefit individuals who experience ingrown hairs or excessive sweating.

She also warns that improper hair removal methods, including shaving, waxing, or laser treatment, can cause irritation, burns, or keloids. She advises keeping hair short rather than removing it completely. Scientific findings provide further context.

Research from the US National Library of Medicine indicates that humans have a similar number of hair follicles as apes, although human hair is finer and less visible. This adaptation supports temperature regulation by allowing sweat to evaporate more efficiently.

Certain types of hair, such as eyelashes and nasal hair, serve protective roles, while scalp hair helps regulate heat. Hair also carries social and psychological significance.

Public opinion on the issue remains divided. Media personality Natalie Githinji has said she prefers male partners without underarm hair, citing discomfort. In contrast, Laura Mbatha has argued that grooming decisions should remain a matter of personal choice and noted that body hair serves natural functions.

Commercial brands also influence perceptions. Companies such as Philips and Gillette promote shaving as a way to reduce odour and improve comfort during physical activity. They recommend proper techniques, including using warm water, shaving cream, and sharp blades, to minimise irritation.
