Kenyan Diaspora Mourns Fallen Soldier in Minnesota

Isaac Onchana Segera, a Kenyan-born US Army serviceman, was found unconscious at a Minneapolis bus station on 4 March and later pronounced dead.

Members of the Kenyan diaspora in the United States held a memorial service for Segera on 22 March at the Kenyan Community Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Family, friends, and fellow Kenyans attended to pay tribute to his discipline as a soldier, devotion to his family, and pride in his Kenyan heritage.

The gathering combined grief with solidarity as the community sought to honour his life. Segera is survived by his wife and two children. Community leaders described his death as a reminder of the challenges faced by diaspora families, who navigate responsibilities across continents.

His absence is felt both within his immediate family and among the wider Kenyan community, where he was regarded as a symbol of resilience and service. The family has launched a fundraising effort to repatriate Segera’s remains to Kenya for burial.
