‘Tuju Nearly Died Within Minutes’ – Kalonzo Recounts Medical Emergency During Arrest

Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju is receiving intensive medical care after suffering a severe health episode during his arrest on Monday evening.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, representing Tuju, told the Kibra Law Court that the former minister’s blood sugar had dropped to a critically low 1.9 mmol/L. Doctors warned that Tuju’s life was at risk and that he could have died within minutes without urgent treatment.

“We were even told we might lose Tuju due to the very low sugar levels. We could have lost him within five minutes,” Musyoka said.

Musyoka criticised the police for their handling of Tuju, stating that the former minister had voluntarily gone to Karen Police Station to give a statement after a 36-hour disappearance. According to Musyoka, officers arrested Tuju abruptly, forced him into a police vehicle, and threatened to take him to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.

Tuju’s condition reportedly worsened during the arrest, but Musyoka said police initially refused to allow him medical attention. He was later admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Karen Hospital, where he remains under close supervision. His absence from court proceedings was attributed to his fragile health.

The incident has prompted a response from DCI Director Amin Mohamed, who disputed Tuju’s account. Mohamed stated that investigations indicated Tuju had remained at his residence, even when his phone was off. He added that police had sent a team to secure the property following what he described as a lack of cooperation from Tuju’s family.
