High-End Nairobi Properties Flagged for Demolition Drive

Hundreds of residents at Elite Court in Kilimani are facing eviction as Nairobi County moves to demolish the estate for encroaching on riparian land along Ole Dume Road.

Governor Johnson Sakaja said the estate lies within the Kirichwa Kubwa riparian zone, an area that has experienced repeated flooding. He confirmed that eviction notices have been issued and stated that the action is necessary to prevent further loss of life linked to settlements on protected land.

The demolitions are part of the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, a multi-agency initiative led by the Nairobi River Commission. The programme aims to restore waterways, reduce pollution, and improve flood management. Officials say that encroachment has narrowed river channels, worsening flooding during heavy rains, including damage reported last year at Elite Court.

Authorities have also identified similar violations at Kingara Court, where some houses extend into the required 10-metre buffer zone along the river. Markings have been placed on affected structures in preparation for possible demolition.

Mr Sakaja said the operation is expanding to other parts of Kilimani and neighbouring areas. He noted that the recent removal of part of the State House perimeter wall reflects a broader commitment to enforcing regulations, regardless of a property’s status.

He added that reclaiming riparian land is central to improving drainage and sewerage systems across the city. Residents in high-risk areas have been urged to relocate, with the governor warning that continued occupation of such zones increases vulnerability to flooding and other climate-related risks.

The governor also addressed recent incidents of violence at public events, calling for calm and restraint. He defended ongoing infrastructure projects, including the construction of a modern Gikomba Market, and said the development is expected to be completed within six months.

He cautioned against politicising such initiatives and called for cooperation to support the city’s development agenda.
