Follow Visa Rules or Risk Bans, US Embassy in Nairobi Tells Kenyans
The United States Embassy in Nairobi has urged Kenyan citizens to follow visa rules strictly, warning that misuse could affect future travel opportunities.
In a video message shared online, Chargé d’Affaires Susan Burns emphasised the need for honesty and full compliance during the visa application process. She noted that many Kenyans travel to the United States each year for study, tourism and business, but said increasing cases of visa misuse risk weakening the trust that supports this exchange.
Burns identified several areas of concern, including the use of fraudulent documents, overstaying authorised visits and attempts to change visa status after arrival. She said such actions can harm individual applicants and may lead to wider consequences, including restrictions on visa services for entire countries. Although Kenya has not faced such measures, she stressed that a US visa is a privilege rather than a right.
She also warned against agents who claim they can secure visas through false documentation. According to Burns, many applicants lose money to these schemes and still face rejection or long-term travel bans. She advised applicants to submit accurate information and to respect the conditions of their visas, including leaving the United States before their permitted stay expires.
The remarks highlight broader concerns about the impact of visa violations on Kenya’s international standing. Misuse by a small number of travellers can make the application process more difficult for others and affect perceptions of reliability.
Despite these concerns, Burns reaffirmed the strength of relations between Kenya and the United States. She expressed confidence that Kenyans will continue to pursue opportunities abroad and pointed to upcoming global events, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
