Former Kilgoris MP Gideon Konchellah Dies at 76 After Cardiac Arrest

Kenya is mourning the death of former Kilgoris MP and Cabinet Minister Gideon Konchellah, who died on Saturday, 13 June, after suffering a cardiac arrest while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

He was 76. President William Ruto led tributes to Konchellah, describing him as a leader who served with dignity and commitment throughout his years in public office. In a statement, the President reflected on Konchellah’s nearly two decades representing Kilgoris Constituency, saying his legacy was measured not only by the positions he held but also by the people he served.

“For nearly two decades, Konchellah gave himself to the people of Kilgoris, and through them, to our nation. He represented with dignity. He understood that public office is, above all, a public trust,” Ruto said. He added that Kenya was “poorer for his loss”.

Konchellah served as MP for Kilgoris for almost 20 years between 2003 and 2022. He was also Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons in President Mwai Kibaki’s administration from 2006 to 2007. During his tenure, he oversaw reforms that included the enactment of the Refugee Act. His public service career focused on strengthening governance and protecting the rights of vulnerable groups.

Basic Education Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa confirmed the circumstances surrounding Konchellah’s death. He said the former minister had been unwell since late 2025 and was admitted to hospital on 30 May after developing an infection.

“On June 12, he suffered cardiac arrest and passed away at 4 am. His body lies at Lee Funeral Home,” Ololtuaa said.

He urged the family and the wider community to remain strong during the period of mourning. Leaders from across the political divide also paid tribute. Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli described Konchellah as both his predecessor and successor, highlighting the long-standing connection between the two leaders.

“He served Kilgoris for 20 years, but the cruel hand of death has taken his life. May God rest him in eternal peace,” Sunkuli said.

Narok Governor Patrick Oluntutu also offered his condolences, joining other national leaders in recognising Konchellah’s contribution to public service. Konchellah’s death marks the end of a lengthy political career that spanned parliamentary service and ministerial leadership.
