Senate Urged to Investigate Safety Issues at Bomas Site After Worker Deaths

Kenya’s Senate has been asked to investigate safety conditions at the Bomas of Kenya International Conference Complex construction site following complaints from workers.

On 25 March, Kajiado Senator Kanar Seki formally petitioned the Senate Standing Committee on Labour and Social Welfare to examine the project. He cited alleged unsafe practices, poor welfare provisions and possible breaches of occupational safety regulations. He said the issue was of national importance and called for a review of compliance with labour laws.

The request follows a protest on 16 March, when construction workers blocked Langata Road after the death of a colleague. Protesters claimed that at least seven workers have died since construction began, with many others injured. They said protective equipment was not consistently provided and accused the contractor of failing to address reported incidents.

Senator Seki called for a full assessment of compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act. He asked the committee to determine whether workers receive proper protective gear, whether first aid facilities are adequate and whether emergency response systems are effective. He also requested a record of all reported workplace accidents and details of any corrective measures taken.

In addition, he urged an audit of employment conditions, including contracts, wages, working hours and statutory protections. He said oversight by both the contractor and government agencies should be reviewed to assess whether monitoring has been effective.

The committee is expected to prepare a report on its findings. The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection faces questions over its role in enforcing compliance and protecting workers.

The Bomas of Kenya International Conference Complex is due for completion in April 2026. It forms part of President William Ruto’s plan to replace the ageing Kenyatta International Conference Centre.
