Kikuyu Estate Nears 60pc Completion With 1,140 Units Planned

Construction of a Sh3.25 billion affordable housing estate in Kikuyu Constituency, Kiambu County, has reached 58 per cent completion, with 1,140 units planned on a 6.9-acre site at the Kabete/Kikuyu interchange.

The project is being delivered under an 18-month contract awarded to Vaghjiyani Enterprises Limited. It follows a mixed-income model designed to accommodate households across different income levels within one development.

The estate comprises eight residential blocks, each rising to 14 floors. Three of the blocks include sub-basement parking. A separate four-storey mixed-use building will house retail shops and restaurants to provide services for residents and support commercial activity within the development.

Construction works are progressing across the site. Raft foundations and basement reinforcements have been completed on some blocks, while electrical installations are underway on others. The contractor has partnered with Jua Kali clusters to prefabricate steel doors, windows and railings. Local micro, small and medium enterprises are undertaking paintwork and landscaping.

Once completed, the estate is expected to create permanent jobs in property management, maintenance, security and retail. The retail section is intended to support small businesses, including carpentry workshops, furniture outlets, tailoring services and welding enterprises. The design integrates residential and commercial functions within a single scheme.

The development also includes supporting infrastructure. Plans provide for street lighting, surveillance systems, improved roads, drainage and public utilities to enhance security and support growth in the surrounding area.

According to the State Department of Housing and Urban Development, Nairobi has recorded the highest number of completed units under the national programme, with 1,080 delivered at the Mukuru Met Site. Outside the capital, 220 units have been completed at Lurambi Estate in Kakamega and a further 220 at Elburgon Estate in Nakuru. Homa Bay Estate has delivered 110 units.
