Poll: Majority of Kenyans to Skip Christmas and New Year Celebrations

More than half of Kenyans do not plan to celebrate Christmas or New Year this year due to ongoing financial difficulties, according to a recent survey by Infotrak Research & Consulting.

Despite a slight improvement from last year, when 60 per cent of respondents said they would forgo festivities, economic challenges continue to overshadow the season for most. The survey reveals that 55 percent of Kenyans are unable to celebrate in the usual manner, with financial constraints being the main reason for the change in plans.

The survey also indicates regional and generational variations in festive outlooks. In Western Kenya, the proportion of people not celebrating is highest at 68 percent, while Nyanza stands out as the region with the most festive spirit, as 52 percent of respondents there plan to celebrate. Generational differences are also evident, with younger people between the ages of 18 and 26 showing the highest levels of enthusiasm for the season, despite financial challenges.

For the 45 percent of respondents who intend to celebrate, festivities will be modest. Over half plan to spend time with family, while others will attend church or prayer services. The majority of those celebrating will focus on simpler, more personal activities rather than large gatherings or holidays.
