‘They Tortured Him and Laughed’: Nakuru Mother Mourns Brutal Killing of Son

A family in Nakuru is seeking justice after 25-year-old Rodgers Maruche was abducted and killed in Kwa Rhonda estate in an attack linked to suspected members of the Confirm gang.

Rodgers’ sister, Davin Maruche, said she received a phone call late on 30 November 2025 from a man instructing her to collect “luggage” left near the Sewerage area. When she called back, he told her that her brother had been killed. She recognised the caller as someone who had once been close to Rodgers.

Hours later, relatives found his body near their parents’ home, showing signs of severe torture and multiple stab wounds. Rodgers had returned to Nakuru earlier this year after living in Kisii County, where he operated a small liquor business and supported his mother by transporting produce.

According to his family, he had cut ties with the Confirm gang in 2019, joined a local football club, and was focused on rebuilding his life. His mother, Sarah Owendi, said he had hoped to make a fresh start but remained vulnerable to threats from former associates.

Witnesses reported that a group of men seized Rodgers from his home in Kivumbini estate on the evening of 30 November, dragging him into a white car. Neighbours attempted to follow the vehicle but were stopped when the attackers damaged their motorbike.

Rodgers was later taken to Kwa Rhonda, where he was killed. His family filed a report at Rhonda Police Station, and the body was moved to Nakuru City mortuary. Relatives claim the suspects were seen near the scene afterwards while police officers did not intervene.

Residents say the killing has heightened insecurity in Kwa Rhonda, an area previously troubled by the Confirm gang. Some fear the group may be regaining influence after a period of reduced activity. Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Epuru said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations is handling the case and working to establish what happened.
