CS Mutua Urges Kalonzo to Exit Politics, Says Ukambani Has Nothing to Show

Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has publicly called for Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka to retire from politics, accusing him of failing to advance development in Ukambani.

Speaking during a Kamba community fundraising event in Kilifi County on 29 November, Mutua criticised Kalonzo for what he described as decades of unfulfilled leadership despite holding senior national positions. He pointed to ongoing challenges in Kalonzo’s home area of Tseikuru, including limited road access, electricity, and water supply.

Mutua said his remarks marked the start of a campaign to end what he termed “politics of poverty” and announced a new movement aimed at reducing Kalonzo’s influence in the region. Mutua’s comments came shortly after Wiper secured another electoral victory.

In the Mumbuni North Ward by-election on 27 November, Wiper candidate Antony Kisoi won with 3,849 votes, ahead of Maendeleo Chap Chap’s Harrison Wambua, who received 2,766 votes. The win reinforced Wiper’s dominance in Ukambani, where the party currently holds 14 MPs, three governors, and more than 60 MCAs.

Kalonzo, meanwhile, shifted his attention to national politics, accusing President William Ruto and senior government officials of interfering in by-elections outside the region. Addressing supporters in Machakos on 30 November, he alleged that the president contacted a police commander in Mbeere North to influence the contest in favour of UDA candidate Leo Wamuthende.

He described this as an abuse of state power and said he would file a formal petition naming Cabinet Secretaries and public officers he believes acted improperly. He also criticised the policing of opposition events and promised to include these incidents in the petition.

Kalonzo rejected claims that the opposition lacks a clear agenda, stating that it remains committed to affordable housing and resisting what he views as excessive taxation. He commended Machakos leaders for contributing to Wiper’s victory in Mumbuni North.
