Kenyan Diaspora in Europe Eyes Opportunities Amid 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Preparations

As Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) alongside Tanzania and Uganda, the Kenyan diaspora in Europe is watching closely for opportunities that this major sporting event may present. With Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and Kampala gearing up as key venues, the football tournament is expected to drive economic and social engagement between East Africa and the global community, including the Kenyan diaspora spread across Europe.

Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Ababu Namwamba, emphasized the importance of the diaspora's involvement in the event. "The Kenyan diaspora in Europe can play a pivotal role in promoting our cultural and economic interests during Afcon 2027," Namwamba stated in a recent press conference. "Their investment and expertise in various fields are invaluable as we prepare for this grand occasion."

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, as of 2023, over 200,000 Kenyans reside in Europe, contributing significantly to the economy through remittances that totaled $2.7 billion last year, a significant portion of which comes from the United Kingdom and Germany. This community is seen as a critical asset in leveraging international exposure during the tournament.

In a statement, Kenya's Ambassador to Belgium, Jacob Kaimenyi, highlighted efforts to engage the diaspora in Europe through various initiatives linking them to opportunities arising from Afcon 2027. "We are working closely with European partners to provide platforms for our diaspora to invest in sectors such as tourism and infrastructure development related to Afcon," Kaimenyi remarked.

The Kenya Diaspora Alliance has also been active in facilitating connections between diaspora professionals and businesses in Kenya. Dr. Shem Ochuodho, Chairman of the Kenya Diaspora Alliance, noted, "Afcon 2027 is not just about football; it's a chance for the diaspora to contribute to the development agenda back home. We are organizing forums and webinars to connect diaspora investors with local opportunities."

For Kenyans in Europe interested in participating, a dedicated portal has been launched on the Ministry of Sports website to provide information on investment opportunities, partnership programs, and volunteer roles related to Afcon 2027. The portal serves as a centralized hub for updates and official documents, ensuring transparency and accessibility for all stakeholders.

This initiative aligns with the Kenya Vision 2030 blueprint, which aims to transform Kenya into a newly industrializing, middle-income country by 2030. By involving the diaspora, the government hopes to harness the skills and resources of Kenyans abroad to support this vision.

As preparations continue, Kenyans in Europe are encouraged to register their interest through the Ministry of Sports portal or by contacting the Kenyan Embassies and High Commissions in their respective countries. The engagement of the diaspora community not only boosts the success of Afcon 2027 but also strengthens the cultural and economic ties between Kenya and its global citizens.
