Singer Wendy Kimani Reveals Why She Wants to Move Back Home

Wendy Kimani rose to prominence in 2008 as a finalist on Tusker Project Fame Season Two, establishing her presence in Kenya’s music industry.

Her appearance on the competition introduced her to a wide audience and marked her as a promising vocalist. Although she did not win the contest, the exposure helped her build a foundation for her career. In the years that followed, she released several singles that reflected her growing potential.

In 2014, Kimani relocated to the Netherlands after marrying her long-term partner. She has said the move was not part of her original plans, as her music career in Kenya was gaining momentum at the time. Personal circumstances influenced the decision, which significantly changed her professional path.

During her early years abroad, Kimani experienced mixed feelings. While she had grown frustrated with the challenges of working in Kenya’s male-dominated music industry, living away from home brought new difficulties. She remained mindful of public perceptions about her relationship and chose to keep her private life out of the spotlight.

Adjusting to cultural differences also played a role, particularly as her husband adapted to Kenya’s more spontaneous social environment before they settled in the Netherlands. In Europe, Kimani has accessed new opportunities. The global growth of Afrobeats has created space for African artists, and her choice to maintain a Kenyan sound has helped distinguish her in a market largely shaped by rock and electronic genres.

She has noted that the Dutch system offers structured support for musicians, including clear processes for copyright registration and taxation. However, some challenges persist, such as promoters offering performances in exchange for exposure rather than payment.

Despite these developments, Kimani maintains strong ties to Kenya. She has spoken about the country’s lively social culture, where people easily connect over shared activities, in contrast to the more reserved atmosphere she observes in the Netherlands.

Observations of social isolation among older people in Europe have strengthened her intention to return home. She has indicated that she and her partner plan to settle in Kenya in the future.
