15 Kenyans Evacuated from Iran Arrive in Nairobi
Fifteen Kenyan nationals have arrived in Nairobi after being evacuated from Iran in a government-led operation.
The group landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Sunday morning after transiting through Turkey. The evacuation was coordinated by Kenya’s diplomatic missions in Tehran and Ankara.
Officials from the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, led by Peter Burugu on behalf of Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu, received the returnees on arrival. Before reuniting with their families, the evacuees took part in a debriefing session and received psychosocial support to help them address their experiences.
The evacuation follows rising tensions in the Middle East after military strikes in Iran by Israel and the United States. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has confirmed that no Kenyan casualties have been reported. He added that many Kenyans in affected areas continue with work and study, either in person or remotely, depending on local conditions.
The government has reiterated its commitment to monitoring the welfare of Kenyan citizens abroad, particularly in the Middle East, where more than half a million Kenyans are estimated to live.
