Wetang’ula Calls for Budget Support to Deliver Ruto Projects in Western Kenya

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged leaders from Western Kenya to secure sufficient budget allocations to ensure President William Ruto’s key development projects in the region are completed before the next general election.

Speaking at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Bulimbo, Matungu Constituency, Wetang’ula said Members of Parliament must use the ongoing budget process to obtain funding for both stalled and new initiatives. He identified the revival of Mumias and Nzoia sugar factories, road improvements, market construction and hostel projects under the Affordable Housing Programme as priority areas requiring consistent financial backing.

Wetang’ula told congregants that the President had intervened in projects that had previously stalled. He said the Mumias sugar factory, which had closed and left workers without pay, had resumed operations following government action.

He also called on residents to support Ruto’s bid for a second term and cautioned young people against involvement in political violence. Wetang’ula urged youths to seek opportunities through lawful means rather than accept incentives to participate in unrest.

The event was attended by several senior leaders, including the President’s aide Farouk Kibet, Senate Majority Whip Haroun Cheruiyot, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli, Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe and Matungu MP Oscar Nabulindo. All voiced support for the President’s re-election campaign and said his administration had prioritised development in Western Kenya.

Kibet called on the Luhya community to unite behind the President, stating that such support could strengthen the region’s position in future leadership arrangements. Cheruiyot pointed to progress in the education sector, saying more than 100,000 teachers had been recruited in under three years, which he described as a record compared with previous administrations.

Governor Barasa cited the resumption of construction at Kakamega Level Six Hospital as further evidence of renewed government commitment to stalled projects. Wetang’ula said the success of these initiatives would depend on adequate funding and cooperation among regional leaders, adding that Parliament’s budget decisions would be central to meeting the stated timelines.
