DHS Plans to Turn Massive US Warehouses Into Immigration Jails

The Trump administration is advancing a plan to convert dozens of warehouses across the United States into immigration detention centres, potentially increasing the nation's detention capacity to 80,000.

The project, overseen by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), has raised concerns over the scale of expansion and the conditions detainees may face. The government has identified 23 potential sites in 18 states, including Texas, Florida, New York, and Minnesota.

Some warehouses could house up to 10,000 detainees, with seven sites earmarked for immediate conversion. The cost of the project, including property acquisitions and retrofitting, is expected to run into the billions.

DHS has assured critics that the facilities will meet the agency's detention standards. However, experts question whether these standards can be maintained, particularly given the rapid timeline for implementation. Some locations have already raised safety concerns, including a site known to be unsafe during extreme heat.

The plan has been criticised in light of previous reports of poor conditions at other detention facilities, including a former prison in Texas that housed immigrant families. Allegations of contaminated food and unsafe conditions have prompted accusations that the agency’s detention standards are insufficient.

The proposal has also generated political opposition. In Kansas City, the city council passed a five-year moratorium on private detention centres, reflecting growing local concern about the social and economic effects of such facilities.
