Infighting Rocks ODM as Sifuna Raises Alarm Over Alleged Impunity

ODM faces internal tensions as Secretary General Edwin Sifuna accuses factions within the party of undermining its democratic principles and betraying the legacy of the late Raila Odinga.

In a statement marking what would have been Odinga’s 81st birthday, Sifuna condemned what he described as a growing culture of impunity and intolerance within the party, warning that the democratic space Odinga fought to expand was now under threat. He argued that the late leader’s passing last October had led to a regression in Kenya’s multiparty democracy, with authoritarian tendencies gaining ground.

Sifuna called on party leaders to resist compromise and lead a political renewal in line with Odinga’s ideals. The remarks were made amid rising disputes within ODM, including a public disagreement between Sifuna and Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, who was accused of mismanaging campaign funds during the 2022 elections.

Analysts suggest these clashes highlight a lack of clear political direction as ODM prepares for the 2027 general elections while navigating its role in the current government. In response, ODM leader Oburu Odinga convened a meeting with Sifuna in Nairobi, emphasising the importance of unity and dialogue.

Oburu, who succeeded his brother as party leader, described Sifuna as a “sober and principled voice” and defended robust debate within the party as essential for its growth. He rejected any attempts to silence Sifuna, arguing that differences of opinion were part of the party’s strength.

Despite Oburu’s efforts to ease tensions, pressure on Sifuna remains. Migori Senator Eddy Oketch recently filed a petition seeking Sifuna’s removal as Secretary General, accusing him of misconduct and defying party decisions. However, Oketch withdrew the petition shortly after, following consultations with senior party members.

The senator explained that the decision was influenced by Raila Odinga’s legacy of dialogue and reconciliation, even with political opponents.
