Ministry of Health Cautions Against the Use of Unprescribed Antibiotics

Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has warned against the misuse of antibiotics during the festive season, urging Kenyans to avoid self-medicating with over-the-counter drugs.

Muthoni expressed concern over the growing tendency for people to seek quick treatments for common illnesses such as diarrhoea, vomiting, or fever without consulting medical professionals. She emphasised the importance of seeking proper medical advice before taking antibiotics, noting that improper use could contribute to the global issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

AMR, which is caused by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics, has become a major global health threat. According to the World Health Organisation, AMR was responsible for 1.27 million deaths in 2019 and contributed to nearly five million more. The condition makes infections harder to treat and poses a significant risk to routine medical procedures, including surgery and cancer treatments.

The Principal Secretary also highlighted the increased risk of contagious illnesses during the festive season, due to travel, social gatherings, and shared food. To minimise these risks, she advised the public to practise strict hygiene measures, such as regular handwashing and using sanitisers, and to avoid sharing personal items like utensils.

She particularly urged caution around vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those with chronic health conditions. Muthoni recommended that families hold gatherings in well-ventilated outdoor spaces to reduce the spread of infections, limit crowding, and shorten the duration of events. “Wash your hands before handling food, avoid sharing cups or bottles, and maintain good hygiene practices,” she added.
