‘Nairobi Needs Me,’ Moses Kuria Says as He Signals 2027 Governor Bid

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has indicated that he may run for Nairobi governor in the 2027 elections, arguing that the city requires a fundamental overhaul rather than minor reforms.

Speaking during an interview in Siaya County, Kuria said his interest in the position is driven by concern over Nairobi’s condition, not by personal ambition. He maintained that his political relevance does not depend on holding office, but that the city’s challenges require decisive and transformative leadership.

Kuria dismissed suggestions that his earlier loss in the Kiambu gubernatorial race weakened his standing. He said the consequences of poor leadership have been more damaging to Kiambu residents than his own failure to win the seat, framing his political record around governance outcomes rather than electoral success.

He described Nairobi as a city in severe decline, arguing that it has become largely unplanned and overwhelmed by deteriorating infrastructure. In his view, incremental improvements are insufficient to address the scale of the problems facing the capital.

Kuria called for a complete restructuring of Nairobi’s governance and urban systems. To support his argument, he cited Nigeria’s decision to develop Abuja as a new capital to ease pressure on Lagos, suggesting that Kenya may need to consider building an alternative city to reduce congestion and improve planning.

He said his experience advising multinational companies and foreign governments has equipped him with the technical knowledge needed to manage complex urban challenges. Kuria presented himself as a candidate with international exposure and practical expertise in large-scale systems development.

However, he said any decision to contest the governorship would depend on public support. Kuria said that he would respect the wishes of Nairobi residents and would step aside if they chose another leader.
