Mombasa Police Arrest Chinese Fugitive Wanted for Murder

Kenyan police have arrested a Chinese national in Mombasa who is wanted over a murder investigation linked to Tanzania and China.

Officers detained 44-year-old Zheng Lingyao on Monday in Likoni, Mombasa County, following a report that he had assaulted his girlfriend in the Senti Kumi area. Police from Shelly Beach Police Station confirmed the arrest and said subsequent checks showed he is wanted by authorities in Tanzania and China.

Zheng is suspected of involvement in a fatal shooting that took place in Dar es Salaam in June 2022. Tanzanian police allege that he shot and killed 26-year-old Fu Nannan, a Chinese national, during an incident at a residential building on Kalenga Street in the Ilala area.

A second victim, identified as Nie Mnqin, was seriously injured after being shot in the stomach and was taken to Muhimbili National Hospital for treatment. Tanzanian investigators later said the shooting was linked to a personal dispute involving the three individuals.

At the time of the incident, Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander Jumanne Muliro said a manhunt had been launched and that police were committed to arresting the suspect. Following his arrest in Kenya, Zheng has been transferred to Shimo La Tewa prison as authorities carry out verification procedures and consult with foreign agencies.

Police said he is expected to appear in court once preliminary processes are completed. Law enforcement sources indicated that Tanzanian and Chinese authorities have been tracking Zheng since the 2022 shooting.
