DCI Investigates Child’s Death at Nyali Madrassa

Detectives in Mombasa have opened an investigation into the death of a five-year-old girl who fell from the rooftop of a madrassa in Nyali.

The incident occurred on 18 November at Madrassa tul Nur in Leisure, Nyali. According to initial reports, the child had been separated from her classmates and kept in a classroom as punishment.

When the other pupils went out for their morning break, she is believed to have tried to leave through a window, from which she fell. Nyali Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer Mohamed Jillo said statements have been taken from teachers, pupils, and administrators.

He noted that the inquiry is examining possible negligence and whether the madrassa complied with child protection requirements under the Basic Education Act and the Children’s Act. A staff member, who requested anonymity, said the girl’s mother had earlier asked teachers to discipline her after she refused to attend class.

The teacher allegedly prevented the child from joining her peers for the 10 am break shortly before the fall. The madrassa’s management has declined to comment, saying a statement will be issued after consultations with investigators. The family has also not spoken publicly.

DCI officials have dismissed claims that the parents are being pressured to drop the matter, stating that the investigation is proceeding transparently. Once responsibility is established, the file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mombasa children’s officer Gabriel Kitile urged learning institutions to ensure pupil safety and avoid disciplinary measures that put children at risk. He emphasised that all centres, including religious ones, must handle children with care and adhere to protection standards.
