Trans Nzoia Governor Natembeya Strikes Back at Mudavadi Over Political Attacks

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has issued a firm response to Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, rejecting claims that a political plan exists to block his re-election in 2027.

Natembeya, speaking in a weekend interview, criticised Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula for what he described as unproductive political remarks that do little for local residents. He said the effort allegedly being directed towards removing him from office would be better spent on delivering development, arguing that both leaders have held senior positions for years without bringing major change to the region.

The governor challenged Mudavadi to personally campaign in Trans Nzoia if he intends to back a rival candidate in 2027. He questioned the PCS’s influence in Western Kenya and cited recent senior appointments of Luhya leaders, such as Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli and Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen John Mugaravai, as evidence of his own commitment to regional representation.

Natembeya contrasted his record with Mudavadi’s, claiming the PCS has not delivered substantial development even in his home constituency of Sabatia, Vihiga County. He described his own career as one built through long service in public administration rather than political favour, and dismissed talk of his removal from office as mere posturing.

He further accused Mudavadi of prioritising national political manoeuvres over addressing local issues, suggesting the PCS is more focused on wider election strategies than on supporting President William Ruto’s development agenda in the region. Mudavadi had earlier indicated that a strategy was being developed to limit the influence of Natembeya’s Tawe Movement and challenge his tenure.

His comments coincided with announcements by former Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha, now Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UN-Habitat, and former Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa, both declaring interest in the Trans Nzoia governorship in 2027.
