Khalwale Breaks from Ruto, Throws Support Behind Fred Matiangi

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has broken with President William Ruto’s camp and declared his support for former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi.

Senator Khalwale announced the shift during a rally in Ekerenyo, Nyamira County, marking a significant departure from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the party under which he was elected. He said the decision followed a lengthy discussion with Mr Matiangi after the former CS revealed his presidential ambitions.

According to Khalwale, he was persuaded by Mr Matiangi’s promise to enforce what he called “brutal government efficiency” if elected president. Khalwale also criticised President Ruto’s development agenda, arguing that transforming Kenya into a first-world economy is unrealistic while corruption persists within government institutions.

In recent weeks, the senator has acted on his new political stance by campaigning for opposition candidates in several by-elections. In Malava, he has backed DAP-K candidate Seth Panyako against UDA’s David Ndakwa, and he has appeared at rallies alongside prominent opposition figures, reinforcing perceptions of a clear realignment.

His actions have prompted a strong response from Kenya Kwanza leaders, who accuse him of disloyalty. In October, the UDA issued him a show-cause letter demanding an explanation for his conduct and warning that continued defiance could lead to disciplinary measures.
