From Kakamega to New York: How Julius Mwale Built a Business Empire in America

Julius Mwale, a Kenyan-born entrepreneur who arrived in the United States as an asylum seeker and experienced homelessness, now lives in Bedford, New York, one of the country's most exclusive residential communities.

Mwale was born and raised in Kakamega County in western Kenya. He attended Mukumu Boys High School before joining the Kenya Air Force, where he developed technical skills in internet infrastructure and research. Those skills later became the foundation of his business career. After becoming involved in property disputes in Kenya, he left the country and sought asylum in the United States in 2001.

His first year in America was marked by severe financial hardship. With limited resources, he struggled to establish himself and experienced homelessness. Despite these challenges, he went on to found SBA Technologies, a New York-based biometrics and security company. 

The business gained recognition in the growing market for identification and authentication systems, providing the basis for his future wealth. Mwale later expanded his interests into healthcare, infrastructure and sustainable development. 

His most prominent project is Mwale Medical and Technology City (MMTC) in Kakamega County, a multi-billion-dollar development designed to combine healthcare services, renewable energy and modern urban planning. The project reflects his focus on technology-driven economic development in Africa.

His success is reflected in his residence in Bedford, a town in Westchester County known for its privacy, natural surroundings and proximity to New York City. The area has attracted a number of prominent residents, including Bruce Willis, Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Ralph Lauren, Martha Stewart, George Soros, Bill Gates and Nelson Peltz. Former US President Donald Trump also owns the historic Seven Springs estate in the town.

Mwale's home is located near the Byram Lake Reservoir, placing him among some of the country's most affluent residents. The contrast with his early years in the United States highlights the scale of his personal and professional advancement.

His career also reflects the role of technology and entrepreneurship in creating economic opportunities. Through his continued investment in Kenya, Mwale has maintained links with his country of origin while pursuing large-scale development projects aimed at attracting investment and creating jobs.
