Exposed: How Kenyans are Being Paid to Join Russia’s War
Kenyans who enlisted to fight in the Ukraine conflict are facing severe risks, with reports of deaths, injuries, disappearances, and prisoners of war.
The situation is complicating Kenya’s diplomatic relations with Russia, as well as raising concerns about the safety and well-being of those involved. Many Kenyans, particularly former members of the Kenya Defence Forces, have been lured by the promise of financial rewards to fight in Ukraine.
However, the reality of the war has proven far more perilous than expected, with many now facing life-threatening conditions in a conflict that shows little sign of abating. Despite government efforts to deter recruitment, informal networks in Kenya and Russia have continued to facilitate the enlistment of nationals.
This has created a gap in oversight, as these individuals, seeking immediate financial relief, are often unaware of the dangers they face. The Kenyan government, through planned talks led by Musalia Mudavadi, is working to secure the release of those caught in the conflict and address the broader issue of labour agreements with Russia.
