Kenyan Mother and Son Reunite in Australia After Three-Year Separation
A Kenyan mother and her 10-year-old son have been reunited at an Australian airport after spending three years apart due to migration delays.
The reunion took place when Vicky Chepkorir met her son on arrival in Australia, where she has been living since May 2023. A video of the moment, showing the pair embracing as they ran towards each other, was later shared online and widely viewed.Chepkorir moved to Australia in search of better opportunities, leaving her son in Kenya while she attempted to secure permission for him to join her. Her first visa application for the child was unsuccessful, extending their separation. A second application was later approved, allowing arrangements for his travel to be made.
The prospect of travelling alone caused significant anxiety for the boy. Chepkorir said he repeatedly expressed fear about navigating airports and connections by himself, particularly during a layover in Dubai. On several occasions, he told her he would rather remain in Kenya than make the journey.
Chepkorir said she spent considerable time reassuring her son, explaining that airline staff would support him throughout the trip. According to her account, airline attendants closely monitored his wellbeing, provided food, and ensured he remained calm and comfortable during the journey.
By the time he arrived in Australia, his initial fears had subsided. Chepkorir said her son later described the flight as an enjoyable experience, crediting the attention and care he received from staff along the way.
