Raila Odinga’s Death Leaves Family and ODM Plans Unresolved

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga passed away on 15 October 2025 in India, while receiving medical treatment.

His death has left unresolved family matters and political plans, halting discussions that were crucial for both his family’s future and the direction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Dr Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother, had been preparing for a family meeting in Dubai to address key issues, including the management of the Odinga estate.

This meeting, scheduled for 19 October, was meant to prevent potential division within the family. However, Raila’s death meant that these sensitive matters remained unaddressed.

At the same time, Junet Mohamed, the Minority Leader in the National Assembly and a close ally of Raila, had planned a meeting with him on 16 October in Dubai. The purpose was to discuss the ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations, strategy for the 2027 elections, and updates on parliamentary affairs.

Instead, Mohamed was met with the return of Raila’s body at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on 16 October, surrounded by family and government officials.

Mohamed, one of Raila’s most trusted political allies, recalled how Raila had played a pivotal role in his political rise.

He noted that Raila always involved him in key decisions, from his appointment as mayor of Migori to his advancement within the parliamentary ranks. Reflecting on their relationship, Mohamed said, “Mzee could not plan anything without involving me,” underlining the closeness and trust between them.

In the wake of Raila’s death, Mohamed expressed a commitment to continuing his vision, assuring ODM supporters that the party's structures would remain intact. He vowed to maintain unity among opposition legislators and ensure the coherence of Raila’s political legacy.

A touching moment during Raila’s return saw his daughter, Winnie Odinga, place her father’s iconic headgear on his casket. This gesture symbolised the end of an era and the lasting influence of Raila Odinga on Kenya’s democratic development.

Raila’s passing creates a significant void within both his family and the political landscape.
