Ruto Congratulates David Munyua’s Historic Win at World Darts Championship

Kenyan darts player David Munyua made history with a stunning 3–2 comeback victory over Belgium’s Mike De Decker at the 2025 PDC World Darts Championship in London.

Munyua, who was two sets down, secured the win with a decisive double 20, marking the first time a Kenyan has won a match at the prestigious tournament.

Munyua’s victory, which included a sensational 135 checkout on the bullseye, has captured global attention.

His composure and resilience under pressure were praised by commentators, with former BDO World Champion Mark Webster calling it one of the most memorable performances in recent World Championship history. In the aftermath, Kenyan President William Ruto congratulated Munyua, describing the win as a “proud moment” for the country.

Munyua’s triumph has not only elevated him as a national hero but also highlighted the potential of African darts, a sport traditionally dominated by Western nations.

Before this year, Munyua had never travelled outside Africa, relying on sponsorship to fund his journey to London.

His breakthrough win has drawn widespread praise and is seen as a significant moment for African representation in global sports. Munyua’s success is expected to inspire young athletes in Kenya and across Africa to explore non-traditional sports. His historic win also brings attention to the African Darts Group Qualifier, through which he earned his spot at the World Championship.

Having secured £15,000 in prize money, Munyua advances to the second round, where he will face either Dutch player Kevin Doets or England’s Matthew Dennant.
