Kenyan Man Found Dead in US Buried as Investigators Rule Out Murder and Suicide

Martin Olage May 31, 2026

Zacchaeus Talam, a Kenyan man living in Oregon, was buried in his home village of Kelelwa in Mogotio Constituency after his body was found ten days after he was reported missing in the United States.

The Kenyan community in both the United States and Baringo County gathered to mourn Talam, widely known as Tom, as investigations into the circumstances of his death continue. Talam, 46, was reported missing on 29 April in Bethany, Oregon. His body was discovered ten days later and his remains were subsequently flown to Kenya for burial.

Speaking during the funeral service, the family's pastor in the United States, Apostle Isaac Nganga, shared information provided by investigators. He said authorities had ruled out both homicide and suicide after examining the body and finding no signs of injury or violence.

“When they examined the body, there was no injury that was seen, no sign of violence, no broken limb, no broken bone, and there was no sign of suicide,” Nganga said.

He added that if investigators had suspected foul play, the family would not have been allowed to repatriate the remains. Nganga urged mourners to avoid spreading unverified information and to allow investigators time to complete their work.

The pastor also said Talam had experienced depression and used the occasion to encourage African men to seek support when facing mental health challenges. He noted that reluctance to seek help can make emotional difficulties harder to manage.

Family members remembered Talam as a compassionate man whose kindness had a positive impact on many people. His death has deeply affected the Kenyan community in Oregon, where friends and fellow Kenyans supported his wife and children during the difficult period.

Kenyan communities in Maryland and Virginia also assisted the family in resolving legal matters related to Talam’s United States citizenship, helping to ensure his remains could be returned to Kenya.
