Life Sentence for Birmingham Man Who Killed Kenyan Caregiver Irene Mbugua
A British court has sentenced David Walsh to life imprisonment for the killing of Kenyan caregiver Irene Mbugua in Birmingham.
Walsh must serve a minimum of 12 years before becoming eligible for parole. Mbugua, 46, was found dead inside a house on Markby Road in the Winson Green area of Birmingham in June 2025.
She had been working as a live-in carer for Walsh, who had several mental health conditions, including paranoid schizophrenia, autism, ADHD and depression. A post-mortem examination found she had suffered severe head and facial injuries caused during a violent assault.
Prosecutors told the court that Walsh strangled Mbugua before repeatedly striking her with a brick, causing fractures to her skull and ribs, as well as a brain bleed. Investigators believe the attack took place on the evening of 21 June 2025. CCTV footage captured neighbours reporting screams from the property around that time.
After the killing, Walsh attempted to hide the crime by placing Mbugua’s body behind a sofa. He also left water running upstairs, causing flooding that partially collapsed the ceiling. Police later recovered the brick used in the attack inside a plastic bag at the property.
In the days after Mbugua’s death, Walsh used her bank card to make purchases while her body remained undiscovered. Police forced entry into the house and arrested him after finding him naked and acting erratically. Officers used a taser to restrain him, and he later assaulted several emergency workers during the arrest.
Toxicology reports confirmed cocaine was present in Walsh’s system. Evidence presented in court showed he had stopped taking prescribed antipsychotic medication several months before the attack.
Walsh was originally charged with murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at Warwick Crown Court in February 2026. He also admitted four counts of assaulting emergency workers.
During sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court, the judge described the killing as “brutal and motiveless”. Addressing Walsh, the judge said: “The harm you caused this family is profound and lifelong.”
Detective Inspector Michelle Cordell of West Midlands Police described the case as “heartbreaking”, saying Mbugua lost her life while carrying out her duties as a carer.
Mbugua’s family said her death was “cruel and devastating” and raised concerns about the safety of carers working alone with vulnerable patients. They said: “Our concerns are there are thousands of Irenes out there who may be at risk. This is so sad, it could, and should have been avoided.”
Originally from Kenya, Mbugua had lived and worked in the UK for two years before her death.
