Two Somali Lawmakers Claim Kidnapping Attempt in Kenya

Martin Olage Jun 20, 2024

Two Somali lawmakers have claimed that they were the targets of a politically driven abduction plot while in Nairobi.

The audacious attack was reportedly carried out by armed individuals in masks and has ignited serious concerns regarding security measures and diplomatic relations between the neighbouring nations. The event transpired as the MPs were departing from a hotel in Nairobi. Eyewitnesses report that a vehicle with tinted windows obstructed the path of the legislators' car, and the assailants forcibly removed the MPs from their vehicle. A third MP escaped the ordeal and later provided an account of the events. Despite being subjected to harassment during their brief captivity, the kidnapped MPs ultimately emerged unscathed.

The Somali community has been left reeling from the incident, prompting urgent calls for a thorough investigation. The MPs who survived the ordeal have since taken to social media platforms to confirm their safety and assert their belief that the kidnapping attempt was politically motivated. While the identities of the perpetrators remain unknown, sources close to the matter suggest that the abductors issued warnings to the MPs against organizing any opposition political meetings for Somalis in Nairobi.

The attempted abduction has the potential to strain diplomatic ties between the two countries. Somali lawmakers and citizens are demanding a comprehensive investigation to uncover the truth behind this brazen attack.
As of now, the ownership of the vehicle used in the abduction is yet to be determined and the alleged assailants continue to elude authorities. Kenyan officials have not yet issued an official statement confirming or denying the incident.
