Odinga Pushes for Continental Integration with AU Passport Initiative
Raila Odinga has unveiled an ambitious initiative to introduce a common AU passport for the 55 member states.
This proposed continental passport aims to enhance trade across Africa and promote unity among the nations. During a meeting on Wednesday with Maarten Brouwer, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Kenya, and Wael Nasreldin Attiya, the Ambassador of Egypt to Kenya, Odinga emphasized the imperative need to eliminate multiple currencies among member states to facilitate seamless economic integration. The crux of the discussion centred on creating a stronger, more unified Africa through strategic measures such as continental integration, improved trade facilitation, and infrastructure development.
Odinga highlights the persistent challenges faced by existing trade agreements in Africa, particularly regarding payment mechanisms. By eliminating the diverse range of currencies, the reliance on the US dollar would decrease, and the common AU passport would enable the movement of people across borders. Odinga's vision entails a phased, evolutionary approach to address complex issues such as currency diversity, visa requirements, and air traffic control regulations.
He firmly believes that introducing an AU passport is an essential step toward easing travel across the continent, thereby fostering greater regional cooperation and economic prosperity. As he vies for the AUC chairmanship, Odinga's proposal aligns with the evolving global environment where regional integration and economic collaboration are increasingly recognized as catalysts for sustainable development. Notably, Odinga has already secured endorsements from the East African Community (EAC) member states, as well as Angola, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, and Zimbabwe.
He aims to succeed the incumbent chairperson Mousa Faki in February 2025. However, it remains undisclosed whether he has received a similar endorsement from Wael Nasreldin Attiya following their meeting regarding his ambitious plan for a common AU passport.
