Why Kikuyu Elders Blew Horn 12 Times During Limuru III Conference

Martin Olage May 18, 2024

The Limuru III Conference witnessed a significant amalgamation of political prowess and traditional rituals.

Amidst the gathering to foster unity within the region, Kikuyu elders took centre stage alongside the political figures performing a sacred blessing ritual that held profound cultural significance. In a solemn ceremony steeped in Agikuyu tradition, an elder stepped forward, accompanied by others, and delivered remarks that resonated with the collective aspiration for unity. The act of blowing a horn twelve times carried a twofold symbolism – the first nine blows represented the nine Gikuyu subtribes, while the remaining three symbolized the unity of the Agikuyu, Embu, and Meru communities. This symbolic gesture was deeply rooted in prayer, a collective plea for unity among the Mt Kenya community.

The elder's words echoed the belief that this gathering was divinely ordained, urging the community to come together and find common ground. The elders expressed the conviction that their agreement would be heard by God, who would bless them and restore their kingship. In Agikuyu culture, the horn holds a revered status, accompanying rites of passage, oaths, homecomings of warriors, the coronation of village elders, and the honouring of respected figures such as chiefs.

The Limuru III Conference brought together a diverse array of political leaders including Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, Jubilee secretary general Jeremiah Kioni, former Governors Ferdinand Waititu (Kiambu) and Ndiritu Muriithi (Laikipia), as well as MPs Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri), Amos Mwago (Starehe), and Mark Mwenje (Embakasi West). On Friday, the youth of the Mt Kenya region rallied behind Martha Karua and Jeremiah Kioni carrying placards advocating for an equitable distribution of resources across the nation through the "One Vote, One Man, One Shilling" formula. The youth also sought to have their voices heard on the contentious issue of miraa trading policies.
