Waititu Apologizes for Backing UDA, Calls for Mt Kenya Unity Ahead of 2027 Polls
Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has apologised to the people of the Mt Kenya region.
He acknowledges that he had misguided them into voting for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party during the previous election. However, Waititu clarifies that he has since parted ways with UDA and has not joined the Azimio coalition. Currently, he considers himself a partyless individual aligning himself with the interests of the Mt Kenya region. During the Limuru III conference, Waititu emphasized the importance of unity among the people of Mt Kenya. He proposed that in the upcoming election, the region should field its own candidate as this move would restore respect and ensure adequate representation of the region's interests.
Additionally, Waititu urges Mt Kenya leaders to support the "one man, one vote, one shilling" proposal, expressing regret over the failure of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI). He stresses the significance of supporting a candidate from the region, regardless of gender. Echoing Waititu's sentiments, Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje highlights the risks associated with disunity and calls for continued collaboration among the people of Mt Kenya. Thuo Mathenge, the leader of the New Democrats party, acknowledges the issues raised during the consultative meeting and emphasizes the need for unity and cross-party collaboration.
Waititu, who had previously supported President William Ruto's presidential bid in 2022, clarifies that he is not part of the Azimio coalition. Instead, he identifies with the Kenyans movement and stands firmly with the people of Mt Kenya. He believes that fielding a candidate from the region is crucial for its representation and progress.
