Ruto to Formally Endorse Raila Odinga's AU Bid Next Week

President William Ruto is set to officially endorse Raila Odinga for the coveted position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

This announcement, expected next week, marks a significant shift in the political dynamics and paves the way for a unified Kenyan campaign. Principal Secretary of Foreign Affairs Korir Sing'oei has confirmed the President's decision and outlined the strategy. President Ruto and Mr Odinga will collaborate to form a campaign team dedicated to garnering regional support for Odinga's bid. This strategy encompasses personal outreach to African leaders by both individuals.

The decision follows internal discussions within the government, public endorsement from the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, and instructions from President Ruto for key figures like Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, East African Community Secretary General Peter Mathuki, and Dr Sing'oei to spearhead diplomatic efforts.
Mudavadi, while not explicitly endorsing Odinga, had emphasized the need for East Africa to lead the AUC and expressed confidence in Kenya's ability to present a strong candidate. He highlighted the historical imbalance, with South, Central, and West Africa holding the chairmanship since 2002.

Leading the campaign efforts for Odinga is former Kenyan Ambassador to the USA, Elkanah Odembo. Mr Sing'oei describes Odembo as a crucial asset, and initial consultations have already taken place at the recent African Union Summit to develop a campaign strategy. While acknowledging potential challenges like rival candidates and debates over the rotational principle, Odinga's team remains confident due to their strategy and government backing. President Ruto is actively engaging with regional leaders, potentially including discussions at the upcoming funeral of former Namibian President Hage Geingob.

Odinga has already secured endorsements from former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and is actively seeking support from other African nations, leveraging his extensive network. He also plans to utilize his connections throughout the continent to advocate for his candidacy. Further bolstering the campaign is the inclusion of Azimio National Coalition Executive Council Chairman Wycliffe Oparanya.
