Mutahi Ngunyi Urges Ruto to Address Kenyans' Cost of Living Concerns

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has said that it is time for President William Ruto to heed the calls of Kenyans.

Ngunyi recommends that the President listen to the grievances expressed by both religious leaders and his political UDA cohort regarding the mounting cost of living. These remarks come after UDA MPs demanded for the Head of State to address the issue. Ngunyi guides Ruto to sift through the myriad of voices yearning to be heard - ranging from Bishop Ole Sapit to the general public. The political analyst has conveyed his dissatisfaction over the overall state of the Nation. Ngunyi believes that it is not always necessary to be right and advises Ruto to seek guidance from God.

During a recent parliamentary group meeting, concerns were raised about the growing level of hostility on the ground. As the economy faces tough times, citizens are increasingly impatient for change. MPs spoke candidly of their difficulties in holding meetings with the public, stating that the economic crisis has swayed public sentiment against them. Despite the president's promise to ease the financial burden and reduce living costs, Kenyans from all corners of the country continue to voice their frustrations about the high cost of living.

On Thursday, President Ruto delivered his inaugural State of the Nation speech to National and Senate Assembly members in which he outlined advancements achieved in executing development strategies since assuming office. Efforts to restore the economy became the top concern after Ruto assumed the Presidency on September 13, 2022. In his speech, the President identified three major obstacles that Kenyan Kwanza has faced, including external shocks, fiscal challenges, and structural imbalances, all of which have strained the economy.

"The Covid-19 pandemic, coupled with global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical conflicts, significantly raised inflation and interest rates, adversely affecting our economy, while low agricultural investment and a prolonged drought led to food shortages and made Kenya a net food importer in a volatile international market," he said.

President Ruto also underscored the government's success in revolutionizing the field of education. Additionally, he stressed the government's dedication to alleviating the burden of expenses, mentioning that families can implement effective strategies to confront this actuality.
