Raila Leaves for the UK

Martin Olage Aug 19, 2023

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has left for the United Kingdom leaving behind a political standoff after he criticised US Ambassador Meg Whitman's comments on the transparency of the 2022 presidential election.

Before his departure, Raila met Delaware Senator Chris Coons who had visited President William Ruto in Nairobi on Friday, August 18. Raila expressed gratitude for Coons' support and pledged to meet him again soon. Raila's trip to the UK is intended to deepen ties between Kenya and the United Kingdom, discuss mutual interests and enhance Kenya's ability to advance its global standing.

"Our paths crossed again last night with my friend Senator Chris Coons heading home to the US while I left for the United Kingdom. We wished each other safe flights, hoping to see each other again. Always a pleasure Chris," Raila said.

During his trip, Raila will meet various business and political leaders, as well as Kenyans living in the UK. However, it is unclear if Raila will give speeches during his visit. The United Kingdom and Kenya share a lengthy history of affiliation dating back to colonial times. Following Kenya's attainment of independence in 1963, the two countries have significantly collaborated in areas such as investment, commerce, security, and developmental support. The UK is the largest trading partner of Kenya in East Africa, and in 2022, their bilateral trade was worth £1.1 billion.

Meanwhile, on August 14, the new High Commissioner to Kenya Neil Wigan took his position as Head of Mission at the British High Commission in Nairobi. Wigan is excited about his new role, having visited Kenya in the 1970s. He is focused on strengthening the relationship between Kenya and the UK, with a particular interest in the £500 billion worth of British investment in clean, green infrastructure projects.
