Ruto's Security Advisor Warns of Consequences if Sudan War is Not Stopped
President William Ruto's security advisor Monica Juma has cautioned that the ongoing war in Sudan could escalate and cause instability in the region if a resolution is not reached soon.
Juma warns that the conflict, which has been going on for more than 100 days, could lead to the creation of breeding grounds for terrorists. Her remarks come as one of the factions in the war accuses Nairobi of supporting their opponent, although there is no evidence to support this claim. The war is between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by Gen Mohamed Dagalo and the country's military under the command of Gen Abdel Al-Fattah.
“With its eruption in Darfur and the tensions we are seeing in other regions, including fighting in North Kordofan, in other areas such as the Blue Nile, there is a real risk of fragmentation of Sudan,” Juma said.
Meanwhile, a hacker group called Anonymous Sudan has targeted Kenyan digital infrastructure, claiming allegiance to one of the factions in the war and demanding that Kenya stop intruding in the affairs of Sudan. The group has attacked eCitizen and other crucial websites but these have since been restored.
However, the security advisor warns that if the situation is not addressed, it could escalate and lead to a crisis in the region. This could particularly affect already unstable countries like South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and Libya. Furthermore, the conflict could spill over into Kenya's troubled north, necessitating urgent action. The war has already resulted in the loss of many lives, with the United Nations reporting over 600 fatalities since April.
