Babu Owino Charged With Conspiracy to Cause Chaos

Martin Olage Jul 20, 2023

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has refuted allegations of conspiring to commit chaos or subversive activities.

The MP was arrested on Tuesday evening and detained in several police stations before being taken to court with six other suspects including self-styled ghetto president Calvin Gaucho. The group appeared before Chief Magistrate Lukas Onyina on Thursday and denied the charges of conspiring to commit subversion.

Babu Owino's legal team comprising Njiru Ndegwa, Duncan Okatch, Danstan Omari, and Jackson Awele claimed that their client had not eaten or drunk water for three days and was unwell. They also said the MP had been arrested at the airport and held incommunicado at Wang'uru Police Station in Kirinyaga. The charges against the group alleged that they had engaged in activities that were prejudicial to public order between July 8 and 18 in Nairobi, in conjunction with others who were not present in court.

"Babu Owino has been 'Shakaholered' for three days," the defence team told Milimani chief magistrate Lucas Onyina.

The prosecution requested that the suspects be held without bail due to concerns that they may interfere with witnesses and ongoing investigations. In other news, former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was reportedly arrested on Wednesday along with two others, Felix Lekishe and Peter Kamunya, at his home in Matasia, Kajiado County. According to sources, Mr Njenga is being investigated for his alleged involvement in the recent anti-government protests that began on July 19th and are scheduled to end on July 21.
