The Enemy is Not Raila But the People – Mutahi Ngunyi Warns Ruto

Martin Olage Jul 09, 2023

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has urged President William Ruto to treat the Azimio demonstrations with the attention they deserve.

His remark was roused by a video of a multitude of individuals who on Friday braved the police tear gas and water cannons and marched on to Kamukunji to attend the Saba Saba rally organized by Azimio leader Raila Odinga. The plan was to march all the way to Central Park for Raila to deliver a speech. Despite the tight security, Raila insisted on leading the procession himself. Raila was eventually permitted to drive through the CBD, however, his supporters were not allowed to go beyond the police barricade.

"Dear Ruto: This picture scared me. It is a ground swell. You cannot buy these multitudes. And you can kill the messenger, but not the message. The enemy is not Raila. The enemy is the People. These people have nothing to lose except their chains. Don't be casual," Ngunyi said.

In a media address at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation in Upper Hill, the former Prime Minister termed their entry into the CBD a great achievement. He reiterated his plan to gather 10 million signatures to pressure the Ruto regime out of power. Raila condemned the police for lobbying tear gas to peaceful protesters, further claiming his vehicle was shot at Moi Avenue.

In a separate tweet, the esteemed political analyst urged the President not to overlook Kenya's dissatisfaction with his leadership, noting that revolutions often begin in a similar manner to the Azimio protests. He continued by citing the French Revolution, which began with people asking for cheaper bread, only to be met with derision.

"Today, France is burning. In 1789, when the French people asked the Oligarchs to drop the price of bread, they told them: "...If you can not eat bread, eat cake," Dear Ruto," Ngunyi added.
