EACC Launches a Probe into Former CS Fred Matiang’i’s Wealth

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched an investigation into former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s wealth over a 10-year period from 2012 to 2022.

On Monday, the anti-graft agency wrote to State House Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei seeking information regarding the declared wealth of Matiang’i.

"The Commission is carrying out investigations involving Dr. Fred Matiang'i, former Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government," the letter reads.

EACC Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak confirmed that the commission is investigating the former cabinet secretary even though he did not give further details of the probe.

Mbarak wants Koskei to avail wealth declaration forms submitted by Matiang’i, saying EACC is pursuing the matter based on Section 30(1)(4)(b) of the Public Officers Ethics Act.

“The Commission wishes to request for Certified Copies of Declaration of Income, Assets and Liabilities forms for years 2012 to 2022, including the initial and final declarations,” the letter adds.

Mbarak delegated EACC detectives Abdul Low and Paul Mugwe to collect the documents from Koskei's office at Harambee House.

Matiang’i was first sworn in as the Cabinet Secretary for Information and Communications in 2013. He later served as Education CS before he was moved to the Interior docket in 2017 and was retained in the same ministry when retired President Uhuru Kenyatta was reelected.
