Gachagua Comes to the Aid of Freedom Hero Dedan Kimathi's Ailing Widow
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has promised to settle the hospital bill of Mukami Kimathi, the widow of Kenyan freedom hero Dedan Kimathi.
Kimathi’s family appealed for assistance from Kenyans of goodwill after Mukami was detained at a Nairobi hospital over a medical bill of over Sh1 million.
Through Twitter on Sunday, Gachagua said he has tasked Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru to address the matter and promised to visit Mukami once he returns to Nairobi.
"I am saddened that Mukami, the wife of our hero, Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri, has been ill and admitted at a Hospital in Nairobi," Gachagua wrote on Twitter.
“This matter was brought to my attention yesterday while on a working tour in Nyanza with H.E. President William Ruto.”
"In this regard, I have tasked Embakasi Central MP Hon. Benjamin Gathiru a.k.a Major Donk to look into her situation urgently. On my return to Nairobi later today, I will make time to visit our mother to check on her progress and assess possible interventions to make her life more comfortable,” he added.
Mukami was reportedly admitted to a city hospital on January 5th with pneumonia symptoms and was treated and discharged on January 12th, according to the family.
But she was not allowed to leave the facility as the family was unable to offset the hospital bill, which had accumulated to Sh1,045,883.
“We are calling out on Kenyans of goodwill to come to our aid. We are helpless as we cannot afford the medical bill,” Miriam told The Standard.
