President Ruto Pledges to Transform Kibera from a Slum into an Estate by 2027

President Ruto has pledged to transform Kibera from a slum into a ‘real estate’ by the end of his term in 2027 through the ongoing affordable housing program, which seeks to build 200,000 units annually.

Speaking during the Association of Pension Trustees and Administrators of Kenya stakeholders' meeting in Nairobi on Friday, the president said his administration is keen to ensure the livelihoods of people living in the informal settlements are changed.

“God willing, by the end of my term, I want to change Kibera to be a real estate, not a slum,” Ruto said.

He pointed out that 5,000 housing units were already under construction in the area with a similar number set to be launched progressively.

“Tunataka nchi iko na infrastructure ambayo itafaidi wakenya wote, kama ni mabarabara inafaidi watu wote, kama ni manyumba pia ifaidi kila mtu,” he said, adding that 6.5 million Kenyans currently live in informal settlements.

During the forum, Ruto wooed the stakeholders to collaborate with the government in undertaking infrastructure projects, mainly on housing and roads.

“From the roads board, I have about Sh40 billion every year ring-fenced on its account and I can dedicate to pay you if you agree to give this money to be able to finish these roads,” said Ruto.

President Ruto reiterated his commitment to save Sh300 billion in the current financial year for development, saying he instructed Treasury Cabinet Secretary to liaise with all ministries to cut down on unnecessary expenditure.

“I know it is not easy but we are going to do it. We are going to slow down on foreign trips and delay some new projects. I will not be the President who will continue taking the country to deb,” he added.
