Cabinet Nominee Kipchumba Murkomen Reveals He is Worth an Estimated Sh550 Million

John Wanjohi Oct 19, 2022

Cabinet nominee Kipchumba Murkomen has told the National Assembly Committee on Appointments that he is worth an estimated Sh550 million, accumulated from law practice, salary as Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator, and farming.

Murkomen, who is the Cabinet Secretary nominee for Roads, Transport, and Public Works, said his wealth includes houses in Nairobi and Eldoret, three parcels of land in Trans Nzoia, and parcels of land in Narok, Kajiado, and Nairobi.

"I am worth an estimated figure of Ksh.550 million made up of majorly my properties in Nairobi and another in Eldoret. Parcels of land, 3 in Trans Nzoia, one in Narok, one Kajiado and another one in Nairobi apart from where I live. I also have machinery vehicles and I also own a wheelbarrow,” he said during the vetting session.

"I practice law under the firm of SMS advocates LLP and I have been earning a salary as my job as a Senator of Elgeyo-Marakwet county and I also do a bit of farming," he added.

If his nomination is approved, Murkomen pledged to unravel the secret agreements relating to the construction of the Sh450 billion Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line project.

“In my preparation to come to this committee, I spoke to everybody whom I thought was a person of influence and none would tell me they have ever seen the SGR agreements. The agreement has become opaque,” Murkomen said.

“So my first responsibility when I get to offices is to find where the agreement is and give it to the people of Kenya through parliament. Why are we hiding.”

Murkomen was responding to a question on whether the Mombasa Port has been used as a guarantee in the SGR contract.

“If the Port has been used as a guarantee, we leave knowing that as we manage the SGR and port, we know our exposure,” Murkomen said.
